Preparing for the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certificate Course – Making It Easier for You

Wednesday, February 25, 2015

Possessing the ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Card is the national standard and required for nurses administering chemotherapy and biotherapy. In 2014, the on-line 4-week ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certificate Course replaced the in-person 2-day course. There are benefits to taking an on-line course (e.g. ability to access at all hours of the day and night) but, unfortunately, many nurses find it challenging as well.

In an effort to support community nurses who will be taking this course on-line, the Bay Area Tumor Institute has decided to provide a short class to help you prepare.  This 2-hour continuing education class is designed for all oncology nurses as well as non-oncology nurses who are planning to enroll in the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certificate course.  This class will cover:

  • An overview of strategies to promote timely and successful completion of course requirements;
  • Methods for navigating an on-line course website;
  • Topics related to safe handling and administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy; and,
  • Strategies for minimizing test taking stress.

Objectives

Upon completion of this class, the participant will be able to:

  1. List two toxicities commonly seen with chemotherapy and 2 nursing management strategies for each toxicity.
  2. Describe 3 key components for safely administering chemotherapy.
  3. Identify 3 techniques to minimize stress when taking an on-line course.
